How can I produce the not symbol (~) using LaTeX?

I found the \sim thing, but I'm trying to get the ~ to be right next to the Letter. When I use \sim, the ~ has a space after it.

Eg: I want this ';Q (and) ~P'; but I get this ';Q (and)~ P';

Anyone know a different way to get the ~ symbol?How can I produce the not symbol (~) using LaTeX?
try putting one or more \! 's in math mode. the \! command creates a 'negative thin space'

for example $\sim\!\!P$How can I produce the not symbol (~) using LaTeX?
Sorry I'm not familiar with those terms....but thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks for helping me on those problems. You must be like a math genius! I didn't understand cuz I wasn't there for the lesson, but thanks. Do you happen to understand this other problem? If not its ok. But thanks for your help!!!!!
