Are food service workers and mis-use of latex gloves giving you a false sense of security?

Latex/rubber gloves are a common sight in environments where food is handled these days. But are they being used properly? Are people getting sick from their mis-use?

Well, just look closely the next time you visit a deli or any place where you can observe food service workers handling food. They'll slice your deli choices, then grasp a germ-laden towel to wipe something. In the course of their work, they touch non-food-type surfaces such as display counter tops, slicing machine handles, refrigerator door handles, boxes/cartons of various kinds, the scale, and other surfaces that are not cleaned with the same attention given to items that come into direct contact with food.

So meat and fat residue is sitting on these surfaces to fester all day long and the workers and the public seem to think that a magical state of cleanliness is being achieved because gloves are being used.

Have you observed this? Do you feel as comfortable about ';professional'; food preparation? Are food service workers and mis-use of latex gloves giving you a false sense of security?
Meh, that's life. If you go around all your life being a germaphobe you're putting yourself through a whole lot of unnecessary worry and stress. Are food service workers and mis-use of latex gloves giving you a false sense of security?
Latex gloves are an neccessity, because it keeps food sanitary. When I say sanitary, I mean when wearing them your hands (bare hands) does not give the food any bacteria or germs from your hands. Report Abuse

i have worked in fast food/deli and i understand the false sense that it is sanitary and i worked with people who used in 8 hours 4 or less pair of gloves i would personally use any where from 50 to 100 gloves a day(i didn't pay for them). but because i know about cross contamination it was very wise to do you as a consumer can request that the employee change his/her gloves. this is an important issue every time that a employee moves from one station to another or out of your sight them gloves should be changed. if a deli worker slices your meat and you have turkey then you want ham the gloves must be changed. if the employee goes from meat to cheese change gloves. if from hot food to lunch meat change gloves. if the cook in the deli comes to help on the counter change gloves. i don' buy if i see that one employee does not change gloves. cleaning should be done every 30 minutes with gloves and water and clean clothes always change gloves. MY BELIEF IS IF I WOULD NOT WANT IT SERVED TO ME I WOULD NOT SERVE IT TO OTHERS WITH OUT CHANGING MY GLOVES.
You are absolutely right. I will not eat anything those places anymore,
You are so right. Not only that but a lot of people think that because they use gloves, hand washing is not necessary and therefore we might be getting more germs now than before gloves!
Yes, you are so right! It is so nasty how some people handle our food...sometimes, I just want to tell them to let me get it myself! I am a germaphobic...so this really bothers me alot. You know they could grab a paper towel from a dispenser before touching anything besides the food! Just like how we grab one to turn off the faucet after washing our hands, or to open the door...that is what they could do..
You need to travel abroad. They don't have the health sanitation requirements we do.
Yes I notice that. The best is when they handle the cash register n then prepare ur food with the same gloves. Whats the point of that?
